The inaugural Visual Analytics Summer Camp, a two-week hands-on educational workshop, was held July 14-25 at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA.

The National Visualization and Analytics Center hosted an inaugural Visual Analytics summer camp, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and held at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, July 14-25, 2008. The workshop was an enormous success with comments ranging from “the agenda had a great mix of fascinating topics” to “this workshop was very valuable and worth every minute”.

The seventeen hand-selected participants were all early in their career of visual analytics and represented a variety of backgrounds including government, industry and academia with an international presence as well. Attendees came from the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, Mercyhurst College, Simon Fraser University, Middlesex University and others.

The group was immersed in ten days of in depth training. The agenda included panel sessions, an analytic writing assignment, hands-on experience with tools including Jigsaw, IN-SPIRE, Analyst’s Notebook, Starlight, in addition to sessions on evaluation, and a watch and warn course. In addition there was an ample amount of time for networking including planned social events and lunch with PNNL researchers. Relationships were formed that will lead to future partnerships.
